IFS & Parts Work Therapy in New York and New Jersey

A part of you wants to change. Another part is doing exactly what you promised yourself you wouldn’t do again. Then there’s the part telling you how ridiculous this all is.

I’m interested in what each of those reactions is trying to do for you. Even the one you wish would go away.

You might recognize this

You can have more than one reaction at once.

You want help and feel annoyed when someone offers it.

You know you need rest and cannot let yourself stop.

You want to say no and hear yourself agreeing.

You criticize yourself before anyone else has a chance.

You want closeness and start looking for reasons to leave.

You understand the pattern and still feel caught in it.

Understanding the experience

What is IFS therapy?

Internal Family Systems, or IFS, is a therapy model that uses the language of parts to explore different feelings, beliefs, and protective responses. In ordinary life, we already say things like, ‘Part of me wants to go, but part of me wants to stay.’ My work is informed by IFS training.

Parts work is a broader term; IFS is one specific model. We can use this way of understanding your experience without requiring you to picture characters, use particular labels, or say things that do not feel natural to you.

Understanding a protective part does not mean agreeing with everything it does.

A critical reaction may be trying to prevent embarrassment. Pulling away may help you avoid feeling dependent. Staying busy may keep difficult feelings at a distance. Those are possibilities to explore together, not explanations I will assign to you.

We can take the cost of a behavior seriously while asking what it fears would happen if it stopped. That question can give us more to work with than another round of arguing with yourself.

How we might work together

What we can pay attention to in therapy.

01

Notice what is happening

We start with a thought, reaction, or recent interaction. You do not need to know the names of your parts.

02

Get curious about its concern

What does this reaction expect? What is it trying to keep you from feeling or risking? We leave room for not knowing.

03

See what would help

We consider what the reaction needs, how the work feels, and whether there is room for a different response.

My approach is informed by IFS training, attachment-based work, and trauma-informed care. We discuss what fits your needs rather than follow a fixed sequence.

Inside the therapy room

We don’t have to make the critic disappear.

You might tell me, ‘I hate that I need reassurance.’ We can notice the longing for support and the reaction that judges it. Both matter. We do not need to choose one side and force the other to cooperate.

Questions about IFS & Parts Work

Frequently asked questions

Are IFS and parts work the same thing?

IFS is a specific therapy model. Parts work is a broader term for approaches that explore different aspects of inner experience. This practice uses an IFS-informed approach based on my training.

Do I have to visualize parts?

No. We can use ordinary language about feelings, thoughts, and reactions. We can discuss what fits and adjust when an exercise or description does not feel useful.

Does talking about parts mean I have a dissociative disorder?

No. Using parts language does not establish a diagnosis. If dissociation is a concern, it deserves an individual assessment rather than a conclusion based on terminology.

Will you make me confront a part I am afraid of?

We can talk about that fear and go slowly. The goal is not to force an internal conversation or push past your willingness.

Can IFS-informed work connect with trauma or addiction therapy?

Yes. When relevant, parts work can be one way to explore protective reactions alongside trauma, attachment, or addiction concerns. We discuss the approach in relation to your needs.

Do you offer telehealth in New York and New Jersey?

Yes. I currently offer telehealth for adults in New York and New Jersey. I am an LMSW in New York and an LSW in New Jersey, and practice under LCSW supervision.

What does individual therapy cost, and do you accept insurance?

Individual sessions are $200 for 50 minutes. I do not accept insurance. A free 15-minute consultation gives us a chance to discuss fit, with no obligation to begin therapy.
