You might recognize this

Sometimes the difficult thing is what wasn’t there.

You can explain everyone else’s feelings and struggle to name your own.

You minimize something painful before anyone has responded.

You feel guilty asking for help, even when you need it.

You were praised for being easy and learned to keep it that way.

Someone cares about you and you don’t quite know what to do with it.

You compare your childhood with someone else’s and decide yours doesn’t count.

Understanding the experience

What is childhood emotional neglect?

Childhood emotional neglect describes a pattern in which a child’s emotional needs were not adequately noticed or responded to. It can be difficult to name because you may be thinking about what was absent rather than one clear event.

This does not tell us everything about your family or your parents’ intentions. You may remember love alongside loneliness, or practical care alongside very little room for distress. Therapy can make space for that complexity without requiring you to settle on a verdict about your childhood.

How it may show up in adulthood

You might be comfortable being useful and uncomfortable being cared for. Perhaps you do not notice a need until you are exhausted or resentful. Or you feel hurt and immediately start explaining why the other person could not have done anything differently.

These patterns can have more than one explanation. Recognizing yourself here does not prove emotional neglect or establish a diagnosis. We can explore your experience carefully and pay attention to how it affects life now.

How we might work together

What we can pay attention to in therapy.

01

Notice what you dismiss

We pay attention to moments when you say something hurt and then quickly explain why it should not matter.

02

Make room for needs and feelings

We explore what you notice, what feels unfamiliar, and what makes asking for care difficult.

03

Look at relationships today

We consider boundaries, support, and what happens when someone responds differently from what you expect.

My approach is informed by IFS training, attachment-based work, and trauma-informed care. We discuss what fits your needs rather than follow a fixed sequence.

Inside the therapy room

“It wasn’t that bad. They did their best.”

Maybe they did. We do not have to argue with that to ask another question: what was it like for you? You can understand a parent’s limitations and still have feelings about what you needed from them.

Questions about Childhood Emotional Neglect

Frequently asked questions

Can I have experienced emotional neglect if my parents loved me?

Love and difficulty responding to a child’s emotional needs can coexist. We can explore what care looked like in your family without assuming your parents’ intentions.

Is emotional neglect the same as CPTSD?

No. Emotional neglect describes experiences. CPTSD is a clinical diagnosis with specific requirements. One does not automatically establish the other.

What if I don’t remember much of my childhood?

We can start with your current feelings and relationships. We do not need to infer neglect from memory gaps or reconstruct events to begin talking.

Do I have to confront my parents?

No. Therapy does not require confrontation, estrangement, or a particular decision about family contact. We can explore your circumstances, goals, and boundaries.

Can therapy help me talk about needs I cannot name yet?

That can be part of the work. We can begin with a recent moment, what you noticed, and what felt hard to say without requiring an immediate answer.

Do you offer telehealth in New York and New Jersey?

Yes. I currently offer telehealth for adults in New York and New Jersey. I am an LMSW in New York and an LSW in New Jersey, and practice under LCSW supervision.

What does individual therapy cost, and do you accept insurance?

Individual sessions are $200 for 50 minutes. I do not accept insurance. A free 15-minute consultation gives us a chance to discuss fit, with no obligation to begin therapy.
