Why Do I Feel Worse Before Feeling Better in Therapy

It’s one of the most unsettling experiences in therapy.

You finally decide to get help. You start opening up. And instead of feeling better, everything feels heavier. You might feel more emotional, more anxious, more aware of things you were able to push aside before.

And then the thought comes in quietly
What if this is making me worse

This experience is far more common than people realize.

When you begin therapy, especially trauma therapy, you are no longer avoiding or bypassing what your system has been holding. For a long time, your mind and body worked hard to keep things contained. That might have looked like staying busy, overthinking, shutting down, or pushing things away quickly.

Therapy changes that pattern.

Instead of suppressing, you start noticing. Instead of disconnecting, you start feeling. And that shift can feel like things are getting worse, when in reality, something very different is happening.

Your awareness is increasing.

Imagine carrying a heavy bag for years without really looking inside. Therapy is the moment you start opening it. For a while, everything feels more present, more real, sometimes more overwhelming. Not because it is new, but because it is no longer hidden.

This is especially true for people working through trauma. The nervous system has learned to protect you by keeping certain experiences out of awareness. As that protection softens, more comes into view.

That does not mean something is going wrong. It often means something important is beginning.

This is also why pacing matters. Good trauma therapy does not rush you into everything at once. It helps you build stability while gently increasing awareness. If things feel too intense, that is something to talk about directly. Therapy should feel challenging at times, but not destabilizing.

If you are in this stage, you might also notice moments where you question the process entirely. That is part of it too. Change can feel unfamiliar, and unfamiliar can feel unsafe at first.

Feeling worse before feeling better is not a failure of therapy. It is often the point where things begin to shift from avoidance to processing.

The goal is not to stay in that place. The goal is to move through it with support, at a pace your system can handle.
